iPhone Review
Acquisition
Mitch Harris and I dropped by the Apple Store line at Stonestown mall just outside of San Francisco around 4pm yesterday and after 2 hours in line, walked away with shiny new iPhones. Later we learned what a good choice that location was - some folks waited 36 hours at the Apple Store in downtown San Francisco. Btw, the Apple Store folks were great - they gave everyone in line free Starbucks, bottled water, Red Bull and a certain number of Apple t-shirts.
Activation
Plugged the dock into my Mac and the iPhone into the dock and iTunes popped up and walked me through the activation process - after 2 minutes, it showed me my new phone number and synced with my contacts. It took another few minutes to tell it about my imap server and email was working, likewise with wifi.
Impressions
Pros
- calls, contacts, photos, maps, safari, videos, music all work beautifully and are easy to use - I never once opened the manual
- it took me a few minutes to get used to the touch keyboard, but it works well - that said, I wouldn't want to write a long email on it
- it's so thin and light that I forget it's in my pocket
Cons
- No iChat/AIM or IRC. Yes, there are some Javascript bridges, but I haven't found any decent ones so far (including iPhoneChat). Apple really needs to fix this.
- No RSS reader. And Safari is not an acceptable solution. Integration with the Mail app would be much more appropriate - perhaps a RSS to mail bridge + something to auto create the feed folders and sorting rules.
- The UI is nice, but there is no consistent way to back-navigate. A more left-to-right scrolling navigation like the iPod might help here. I find my self getting stuck in places where there is no way to return to where I was without hitting the home button and navigating back down to it. This is a serious flaw.
- the headphone jack doesn't seem to work with normal headphones (at least not with mine) - if you've bought expensive noise suppression headphones, I don't think you can take it for granted that they'll work with the iPhone.
- no apparent way to increase browser font size without zooming
Bugs
- My iCalendar won't sync with my iPhone. This may have something to do with iCal constantly crashing on my mac desktop (though it works on my laptop).
Requests
Functional
- the cell phone companies already support positioning for 911 calls - I'd like this ability to be used with the maps
- I'd like to be able to reply to an email using a voice recording which would get attached as an mp3 (like the old NeXT voice mail could...)
- I'd like a voice recording version of the note pad.
- the email app needs to be smarter about urls that line wrap
- It would be nice if scaling on the web browser could optionally be done with wrapping to avoid having to side scroll constantly - maybe a "wrap" toggle button somewhere.
- I'd like to be able to drag songs onto the iPhone in iTunes instead of just syncing playlists, likewise for iPhoto
- an iPhone tuned Yelp-like app would be nice
- clicking on time area to add calendar entry
- safari should be smarter about caching google map images
- ability to easily wifi files to other iphones and macs
- add-to-contacts option for phone # discovered via google maps
- a way to attach an email to a calendar event
Aesthetic
- a black UI theme for the whole UI like the iTunes interface
- anodized black aluminum for the metallic areas of the case
- black headphones
- did I mention black? ;-)
One More Thing...
I'd like to see Apple make a iPhone centric social networking service with well integrated location info, events, maps, and IM. The focus would be on sharing event info and coordinating casual meetups (meetup.com and event.com are too formal). Something along the lines of posting about events of interest and the likelyhood you'll be there along with your current status.
Verdict
Overall, a great product and I highly recommend it.
